The anniversary of Clinton County

Every community has a beginning. People don’t think about it, but each city and county has a starting date and an origin story. The thirteen counties in the Pennsylvania Wilds were founded between 1795 and 1863. Potter Tioga, McKean, Clearfield, and Jefferson were all founded in 1804. Lycoming was founded in 1795, and Centre County in 1800. And then, on June 21, 1839, parts of Lycoming and Centre were combined to make Clinton County.

From farm to theater: Millbrook Playhouse

Millbrook Playhouse puts on a wonderful selection of plays and shows. It’s existed as a local community theater for over half a century, but the building goes back much further than that. The building is almost a hundred and seventy years old. And it began as a barn.

Bigfoot sightings in the Pennsylvania Wilds

Bigfoot, a bipedal, humanoid land mammal, with shaggy hair and huge feet, known for leaving tracks wherever he goes, is popular because he’s so often sighted. Bigfoot is spotted all over the country. And of course that includes the PA Wilds.

Seal of Approval: The Monster of the Susquehanna

Here's some background on an old PA Wilds legend, dating back over a century: a weird, barely-seen monster living in the West Branch Susquehanna River. It was known as the Kettle Creek Monster, the West Branch Dugong, or, as writer Lou Bernard prefers, the Susquehanna Seal.

Ghost hunters teach and inspire at Ross Library

The Lock Haven Paranormal Seekers (LHPS) is Clinton County’s longest-lasting paranormal investigative team, formed in October 2007. They stress responsibility and evidence in their investigations. Earlier this year, the group held a fundraiser for the Ross Library in Lock Haven, teaching how to investigate the paranormal for the entry fee of five dollars. They revealed one of their most chilling finds, an electronic voice phenomenon (EVP).

The Mystery of the Capitol Columns

The original Pennsylvania Capitol building was built in 1820. It burned down on February 2, 1897, and it was rebuilt. The original building, before the fire, had six stone columns on the front. They were huge, sixty feet tall. Three of them wound up in the Pennsylvania Wilds. The other three.... well, that's a mystery.

My family’s trip on Scenic Route 6

Not too long ago, my family took a weekend trip. I pitched the idea that, on the way home, we take Scenic Route 6 and make a few stops along the way. I did this for two reasons: My family likes to stop and see interesting things, and I could get an article out of it.

The Bellefonte Governors Club

Since Pennsylvania was founded in 1787, 47 people have served as governor. Centre County, located along the I-80 Frontier of the Pennsylvania Wilds, may hold the local record for supplying people to that list. They have had a total of seven men who have become governors: five in Pennsylvania, and two in other states.
