Call of the Wilds: Rallying the Literary Voices of Northern Appalachia

For the past year, PJ Piccirillo and a network of writers and academics from northern Appalachia have been planning The Writers Conference of Northern Appalachia, slated for September 6-8, 2019. The conference will offer writers a space to gather for inspiration, further education, support, and networking. Presentation proposals are due by March 30.

Those visiting the Gmeiner Art & Cultural Center in Wellsboro, PA, December 2018 through February 2019 will be treated to the Creative Makers Exhibit in the Atrium Gallery. An exhibit that highlights some of the artisans involved in the Wilds Cooperative of Pennsylvania and their work.

The National Summit for Gateway Communities will be held in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, December 11-13. The event will feature experts from conservation, community and economic development, recreation and tourism, planning and other creative fields, who will be sharing success stories and lessons learned, and discussing the future of inspiring gateway and rural communities. October 20 ‘Fall Marketplace’ at Kinzua Bridge to feature gifts made in the PA Wilds

On Saturday, October 20, the PA Wilds Conservation Shop at Kinzua Bridge State Park will host a “Fall Marketplace-Cornucopia of Craftsmanship” event from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A variety of unique and handcrafted and locally-made gifts will be available, along with a food truck offering local fare.

Elk Expo 2018: An event for all ages in the heart of the PA Wilds

Thousands of people visit the small Pennsylvania Wilds town of Benezette every fall to witness the elk take part in their annual breeding season, called the rut. The elk are vocal by creating a series of sounds commonly referred to as bugling, grunting, mewing, etc. To kick off this season every August, the Elk Country Visitor Center hosts the annual Elk Expo in Benezette.

The 10th Annual Allegheny River Cleanup will take place between September 8-15, and everyone is welcome to get involved! Volunteers can sign up to participate in one cleanup or all - but must do so by Friday, August 31st.
