The Hickory Creek Wilderness: Hike, fish, enjoy

In 1984, the United States Congress designated 8,663 acres in Warren County as the Hickory Creek Wilderness. For hikers, the Hickory Creek Trail, which runs through the wilderness, is a rolling, 12-mile loop of easy-to-moderate difficulty that can be completed in approximately five hours. In addition to hiking the area, writer Ralph Scherder shares his experiences of fishing in the streams of the Hickory Creek Wilderness.

Test out living in the PA Wilds this summer for free

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live in the PA Wilds? Are you paying rent in a large city but you have a remote job and are thinking, “Why should I live here when I could do this job from anywhere?” If you live outside of the PA Wilds but want to “test drive” what it’s like to live there, you have the opportunity to apply for The Wilds Are Working: A Remote Lifestyle Experience. After a successful pilot program in 2022, remote workers have the chance to apply to test out living in two new communities for 2023. Those communities will be Emporium and Warren.

The Allegheny National Forest celebrates 100 years

With the simple stroke of a pen 100 years ago, President Calvin Coolidge signed a proclamation establishing the Allegheny National Forest (ANF). Thanks to President Coolidge and several other U.S. Presidents, you, me and many others get to enjoy the wonder of it all. The journey that moment in 1923 to now has been long and difficult, with hard work throughout the ANF's history.

Allegheny National Forest will hire 10 interns, applications due by January 27

The USDA Forest Service is hiring temporary student trainees (interns) across the nation, including 10 summer interns in the Allegheny National Forest. Internships are available in social sciences, administrative support, natural resources, engineering, and other exciting and rewarding career paths. The ANF plans to bring on these student interns in one of six career fields. Applications are due by January 27, 2023.

Snowmobile season starts this Friday, with trails open in ANF

Time to start your engines! The snowmobile season officially begins at 8:00 a.m. on December 16, 2022, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Forest Service, with trails opening in the Allegheny National Forest. Snowmobile trails will remain open until 12:oo p.m. on March 31, 2023. Learn more about snowmobiling in the PA Wilds!

A Trip to Tionesta

Although writer Lou Bernard never set out to go to Tionesta, he found that he quickly fell in love with the little community, which is the seat of Forest County. With its stolen courthouse, the gravestones next to its library, the Tionesta Market Village, a replica of the Statue of Liberty, and a rare lighthouse on the shores of the Allegheny River... well, Tionesta has plenty of unique stories in its history.

“All about connections:” Kane’s remote worker initiative showcases outdoor adventure and belonging

Kane, a community in the Allegheny National Forest and Surrounds Landscape of the Pennsylvania Wilds, became home for five remote workers in September. Coming from all walks of life — and all across the country — these individuals got three weeks to explore, make connections and enjoy the outdoor recreation that Kane offers in spades.

Harvesting Wild Leeks in Allegheny National Forest

On most Forest Service lands within the Allegheny National Forest the USDA Forest Service allows the harvesting of wild leeks (Allium sp.) for personal consumption. Personal consumption means harvesting only what you will use for yourself and your family.
