Celebrating our Partners: Heritage and Nonprofit Partners

Today's Great Outdoors Month post goes to the many heritage and nonprofit partners who are helping to grow the outdoor economy in the PA Wilds. Under BBBRC, several of these partners would complete projects in their wheelhouses that would grow the region's outdoor rec industry cluster, such as installing bike repair stations along Route 6, doing an assessment of the PA Wilds as a cycling destination, completing the Brady Tunnel project (a top-10 PA trail gap), bringing new hiking guidebooks to market, and more!

A huge part of the PA Wilds outdoor rec cluster are people and companies who make things, from artisans, to producers, to manufacturers. Learn more about Organic Climbing (a global producer of gear for rock climbing, based in Philipsburg) and Equinox (a soft-goods manufacturer based in Williamsport, specializing in backpacking and hiking products).

To celebrate June being Great Outdoors Month, we are highlighting partners each day who are helping grow the outdoor recreation economy here in the PA Wilds to help revitalize rural communities. Our 13-county region is the only outdoor rec industry cluster to make it to the final round of the national Build Back Better Regional Challenge competition, where we are now competing for $50M in federal investment from the US Economic Development Administration. We couldn't have made it this far without our incredible partners!

The Anagama Kiln: A Unique Chance to Fire Pottery, Commune with Artists

Using an anagama kiln is a rare opportunity to produce pieces which have a certain "look" often sought after by artists and collectors alike. It's also a special time to commune with fellow clay artists, share a drink or two, and even eat a turkey roasted in a pit. Gary Greenburg (known as "Greeny" by his students) offers an opportunity for his art class at Clarion University to take part in the adventure of firing a wood kiln for three straight days. Student and artisan Nicole St. Laurent shares her experience.

Remote work initiative launches in Pennsylvania Wilds community

Piloting in summer 2022 in the PA Wilds community of Bellefonte, The Wilds Are Working: A Remote Lifestyle Experience will allow remote workers to live, work, volunteer, and explore all that the rural area has to offer. Applications are now open through April 30 to participate in the July 2022 Remote Lifestyle Experience.
