Outfitting the PA Wilds: Tussey Mountain Outfitters
Part of the Outfitting the PA Wilds series
Interested in everything canoe and kayak related? It’s time for a visit to Tussey Mountain Outfitters, a small specialty shop in Bellefonte, along the I-80 Frontier landscape of the PA Wilds, with everything you need to explore by water. They handle sales, rentals, and guided excursions on the nearby Spring Creek and Bald Eagle Creek.
Both streams are in a picturesque rural setting. Spring Creek is very swift in spots and you should have some swift water paddling and rescue skills. The Bald Eagle Creek is less demanding but is still swift in spots. There are many different species of birds including Bald Eagles, Ospreys, Kingfishers, Blue Herons, and many migratory bird species. Trout fishing is excellent on both streams. Bass fishing is great on parts of the Bald Eagle Creek. Stop at historic Curtin Village Ironworks along the way to have a picnic.
Want the full experience of a paddle trip but don’t want to go alone? Tussey Mountain Outfitters can provide all the equipment (rental canoes and/or kayaks, paddles, life jackets, dry bags, helmets) for your guided paddle journey. Transport of equipment and your driver(s) shuttle is included. Most of Tussey Mountain Outfitters’ paddle trips are on various sections of Spring Creek or Bald Eagle Creek and take 1-4 hours. The cost is $55 per person for a guided trip.
These guided padded trips are popular among families, friends, businesses, and clubs! Tussey Mountain Outfitters even took the Penn State Football team, coaches, and their families on a canoe trip recently. They were glad to help the team relax and have some fun before their season and fall semester arrived.
Don’t need a guided trip? If you do not need a guide or transport of equipment services or driver(s) shuttle services, you can rent kayaks, canoes and any other paddle sport equipment and you transport from Tussey Mountain Outfitters’ Bellefonte location. You must have a vehicle and or trailer capable of transporting the items you will be renting. You can take the rental equipment to any destination and for any number of days.
Need just a driver? Tussey Mountain Outfitters can also provide simple transportation, including special deliveries to Black Moshannon State Park and Bald Eagle State Park.
If you’re looking to explore somewhere other than Bald Eagle Creek or Spring Creek, other options are also available. They can outfit trips on other popular waterways, such as the Little Juniata and West Branch. Transport fee is $1.50 per mile with a two boat rental minimum. Contact Tussey Creek Outfitters directly for quotes.
Customers can also find a wide variety of canoes and kayaks for sale. Tussey Mountain Outfitters caters to paddle enthusiasts and novices alike. They inventory a diverse selection of canoes, kayaks, paddling equipment, outfitting, and repair items, both new and used items at a range of pricing levels. Special orders are welcome.
