Outfitting the PA Wilds: Sleepy Hollow Outpost

Part of the Outfitting the PA Wilds series

Located in Black Moshannon State Park along the I-80 Frontier landscape of the PA Wilds, Sleepy Hollow Outpost helps travelers find new adventures by renting out kayaks, canoes and stand-up paddle boards.

During the summer season, the boat rental is typically open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Reasonable prices are important to Sleepy Hollow Outpost, as they want all travelers to be able to afford to explore. Because most customers want just a short ride on Black Moshannon Lake, the outpost rents boats out by the hour. Kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards are available to rent for $15 per hour.

Sleepy Hollow Outpost is one of a few outfitters in the PA Wilds located on public lands, within Black Moshannon State Park. Black Moshannon State Park covers 3,394 acres of forests and wetlands and conserves unique, natural environments.

The park is surrounded by Moshannon State Forest, creating a remote and wild setting for adventures and recreational opportunities. Despite its remote nature, the area is only a short drive for visitors from Philipsburg or State College.

For upcoming events and more information, you can visit the Black Moshannon State Park Department of Conservation and Natural Resources page and the Black Moshannon State Park Facebook page.

A bog might not sound like the prettiest place for a trip, but Black Moshannon’s wetlands are a unique feature of the park that provide a great chance to see a wide variety of wildlife! The easy out-and-back Bog Trail is a total of 1 mile and gives you a wonderful view of the Black Moshannon Bog Natural Area. For new hikers or those with mobility issues, this relatively flat trail allows easy exploration and prime spots for capturing wildlife on camera. Volunteers also recently installed benches on the Bog Trail, allowing visitors to relax and take in the view.

Although some visitors come for just a day trip and to enjoy some paddling on Black Moshannon Lake, others choose to enhance their trip with an overnight stay at one of the campground spaces or cabins at Black Moshannon State Park.

Due to the weather-dependent nature of all outfitting businesses, it is best to call ahead of your visit to confirm conditions and hours. Call Sleepy Hollow Outpost at 814-342-1071 with any questions or reservations.

Sleepy Hollow Outpost is a Field Guide member in the Experience Makers category of the Wilds Cooperative of Pennsylvania. Learn more about Sleepy Hollow Outpost and leave them a review or recommendation on their WCO profile.
