Pennsylvania Firefly Festival: Mother Nature’s Fireworks on Full Display

Fireflies, who doesn't love them? The mere thought of them brings back vivid childhood memories of barefoot warm summer nights and a Mason jar with holes punched in the lid. One of the Pennsylvania Wilds most famous gatherings, The Pennsylvania Firefly Festival (PAFF) will celebrate the local firefly population during their 6th annual event on June 23 in Kellettville, PA, deep in the Allegheny National Forest’s Tionesta Creek Valley.

The Great American Cleanup of Pennsylvania will be held March 1 through May 31, 2018. During this event, volunteer groups across the Commonwealth and the nation will be working to cleanup the landscape, beautify communities and hold educational events. You can play a part!

How Growing Milkweed Plots in the PA Wilds Can Help Save Our Pollinators

Inspired by the Duck Dynasty television show, Amy and Jeff Rankinen named their Lycoming County, PA milkweed farm in a similar fashion: Milkweed Monarchy. A member of the Wilds Cooperative of Pennsylvania, Milkweed Monarchy works to both increase awareness of the plight of the monarch butterfly and other pollinators and encourage planting of pollinator plots. In this blog article, Jeff details how the couple first learned about the importance of milkweed plants for pollinator life cycles and how they are now helping to make a difference.

Behind the Scenes: Building Public Trails

Learn about the Pennsylvania Outdoor Corps - A Modern Day CCC Effort: Digging trenches, diverting natural mountain runoff, building benches, stabilizing handrails, constructing stairways … these necessary, but often behind-the-scenes tasks on public lands are sometimes taken for granted. The work is never finished, as foot traffic and natural elements impact the landscape. Such duties were divvied out to some hard-working teens and young adults this year on parks across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Love Your Mother – Community River Conservation

Saturday, April 8 was a special day for Clinton County CleanScapes, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to help communities clean up waterways and landscapes. Fifty-four volunteers turned out to rural Chapman Township, Clinton County, to participate in the Young Woman’s Creekside Beautification Day. After only two hours of working together, the total tally of waste collected for the day weighed in at 1.2 TONS (2,460 pounds).
