Pennsylvania’s ancestral peoples: Our federally recognized tribes and nations

In Pennsylvania, we’re looking at 20,000 years of human occupation lying underfoot in our forests! Native Americans were (and are) present in Pennsylvania throughout the entire period. Archaeologically, we know these people as the Delaware, Susquehannock, and Monongahela cultures; however, we do not know what they would have called themselves outside of oral histories shared with us by today’s Tribes and Nations. Broadly, each culture was associated with one of our major river basins.

John Ryan Brewery, an artisan restaurant with an onsite brewery in a restored French Second Empire mansion in Old City Williamsport along the I-80 Frontier landscape of the PA Wilds, is a must-visit for travelers who want a historic location with an upscale but friendly atmosphere. The menu at John Ryan Brewery is anything but typical! Although there are certainly some common food foods and bar staples, the menu also includes items inspired by various cultures and cuisines, such as pierogi gyoza, takoyaki (deep fried balls of battered octopus), lobster bao buns, duck bento, and their popular collard greens.

The legend of the Sulphur Serpent

It’s no secret that the Pennsylvania Wilds is full of cryptids. In addition to Bigfoot sightings, there are the local ones: the Giwoggle of Clinton County, the Susquehanna Seal, the Potter Nondescript, and the Clarion What-Is-It. It’s always fun to hear about these mysterious monsters in the woods. There’s a legend of another one, this one in the I-80 Frontier landscape of the PA Wilds. Near Sugar Valley, in southern Clinton County, there’s an old legend of a sort of reptile monster that shows up when a comet is passing: The Sulphur Serpent.
