BIRD LORE: Birding for Beginners – A Gateway to Nature and Adventure

I was standing along Pine Creek at 7:15 a.m.; the light was exquisite, the birds were singing their morning songs, and I was chatting with another photographer. As both of us visited, two birds flew over and into the trees behind us. Their quick flash of color and movement caught our attention. One was yellow olive in color; the other was bright red with black wings. My friend turned to me in surprise. “What was THAT?”

Learning to camp, PA Wilds style

I’ll never forget my first time camping out. It was the summer of 1973, and my parents had just bought a brand new Ford Pinto hatchback. My sister and I especially liked the cavernous back seat, which when folded down, turned into a traveling playroom with a glass ceiling.

Relaxing on a summer day at Lyman Run

I followed Lyman Run State Park's signs to an opening in the hills to a lake and a beach. I had made it to Lyman Run Reservoir and beach! Even on a weekday in mid-July, the beach was busy with splashes and children’s laughter. Parents and adults dotted the grassy slopes that bordered the sandcastle-speckled beach. Beyond, in the beautiful water, the merriment of children not confined to school rang out.
