Forest Fridays: The Incident Management Team response in Westfield, PA

The worst of the remnants of Hurricane Debby passed through Pennsylvania on Friday, August 9, 2024. Although much of the Commonwealth received some much-needed rain, other areas received too much in too short a time. Such was the case in the Cowanesque Valley in northern Tioga County, where four to six inches of rain triggered massive flooding, wiping out homes, businesses, and turning life upside down for many in the town of Westfield (population approximately 1,200).

Remnants from Hurricane Debby brought severe rain and flooding to much of the Pennsylvania Wilds region, especially the northeastern section that includes Tioga, Potter, and Lycoming Counties. New PA Wilds Conservation Shop opens in former train depot in Marienville, Forest County

There’s a new shop in Marienville, supporting local artisans and celebrating the Pennsylvania Wilds region’s unique history! In Forest County, a PA Wilds Conservation Shop has opened within an historic train depot in Marienville, along the nearly 74-mile Knox and Kane Rail Trail. Operated by the nonprofit PA Wilds Center for Entrepreneurship (PA Wilds Center), these mission-driven gift shops help improve market access for rural entrepreneurs by sourcing 90 percent of their inventory from rural makers and businesses in the 13-county PA Wilds region, while also accomplishing other mission points.

How Cora Brooks saved lives at Austin Dam

A new interpretive panel near Austin Dam tells the story of how one incredible woman, Cora Brooks, spread the word of the breaking of the Bayless Paper Mill Dam - saving lives of many of those in the path of destruction. The Austin Dam Memorial Association worked with the Lumber Heritage Region and their local Scout Club to install and unveil the Cora Brooks / Bayless Paper Mill sign at the Austin Dam Memorial Park.

Beyond the Dirt

One of the simplest ways to improve our mental health is to get outside. Simply sitting outdoors or taking a stroll has been a documented medical benefit for decades. Locally, we are lucky enough to have access to all of these spaces. We also have mental health professionals and outdoor enthusiasts who are working to provide events in these unique, remote, spaces. Two such people are Jeff and Lyndsey Weidow, a married couple who have a unique and particular viewpoint for such events.  Jeff is the organizer of the Beyond the Dirt event and founder of Project Pedal.
