Check out Pennsylvania’s 2024 River of the Year and Trail of the Year in this PA Wilds town

For its second time in ten years winning the prestigious award, the Allegheny River in the western section of the Pennsylvania Wilds has been selected by a public vote as Pennsylvania’s 2024 River of the Year. Just days after the River of the Year announcement in late January, the PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) announced that Pennsylvania's 2024 Trail of the Year is the Trails at Jakes Rocks, a 35-mile natural surface trail system located in the Allegheny National Forest. The city of Warren is lucky enough to have both the Allegheny River and the Trails at Jakes Rocks, meaning that you can see both the 2024 River of the Year and 2024 Trail of the Year in one visit.

It’s never too late to get into shape on the trails in Warren County

Being a lifelong resident of Warren County, I thought that I knew every corner of it. I was soooo wrong! I have always enjoyed taking leisurely walks around the county, especially in the woods, but I had never truly payed attention to all of my options. With Warren County being surrounded by the Allegheny National Forest, there are many. I think there are many like me who may not be in prime physical condition but still want to explore their nearby trails.

The Goat Fort: Indoor climbing adventures for all ages

Founded out of a passion for the art of climbing, The Goat Fort is an indoor rock climbing gym located in Warren that specializes in bouldering. Bouldering, a form of rock climbing that emphasizes movement and navigating routes, typically is completed by climbers without ropes. While traditional rock climbing often puts attention on height, bouldering instead focuses on the sequences of moves – called “problems” – by looking at how to navigate balance, technique, flexibility, and the ability to problem-solve.

Outfitting the PA Wilds: Allegheny Outfitters

Moving back home to rural Pennsylvania and starting a seasonal, weather-dependent small business… it’s not for the faint of heart. However, Piper VanOrd moved home from Alaska in 2006 to begin her journey with Allegheny Outfitters, a family owned and operated outdoors store and outfitter in the Allegheny National Forest and Surrounds region of the Pennsylvania Wilds.

The Wilds are Working is back in 2023: See the small towns poised to transform WFH culture

In 2022, The Wilds are Working was unveiled as a chance for remote workers to experience life in a charming downtown in Pennsylvania’s Wilds while enjoying outdoor adventure, all while working remotely. The opportunity provided paid housing and a stipend for local experiences that ranged from dining to recreation. More than that, it created the chance for remote workers to visualize their life in a place where livability, outdoor recreation, and close communities lived hand in hand. After two successful experiences in Bellefonte and Kane, The Wilds are Working is back in 2023 with opportunities in Emporium and Warren.
