Explore public lands during ‘Parks and Recreation Month’

July is Parks and Recreation Month across the nation. It’s the perfect time to celebrate and explore our public lands and take in the beauty of nature around us. In this rural region, over 2.1 million acres of public lands are protected and set aside for citizens and visitors to enjoy. The Pennsylvania Wilds boasts 29 state parks, eight state forests, and is home to the Commonwealth’s only national forest: the Allegheny National Forest.

Big Woods Turkey Hunting in the PA Wilds

Turkeys live in some amazing places throughout the country, but it’s tough to beat the experience of hunting them in the big woods and steep mountainous terrain that the Pennsylvania Wilds has to offer. We have over two million acres of public lands available to roam and create whatever type of adventure that you can dream of. Turkey hunting in big timber can be extremely difficult at times, but very rewarding to say the least.

Few things are more exciting than the bowhunting season for white-tailed deer, which opened statewide September 29. There are so many reasons to love it—the smell of the air, the autumn colors, the still-warm temperatures, and sights and sounds of wildlife.  Plus, there’s the white-tail rut, which kicks in toward the end of October.

Additional State Forest Roads Open for Hunting Seasons, Outdoor Activities

Hunters and other outdoors enthusiasts heading into Pennsylvania’s state-owned woodlands this autumn will find additional roads open in 18 of the 20 state forest districts. They will stay open through upcoming hunting seasons continuing into January 2019.

Sept. 1 marks the beginning of dove season statewide in Pennsylvania. The first segment of the season will run through Nov. 24.
