Warren county has a diverse array of recreational activities and attractions creating a great vacation destination for all ages and interests that can be enjoyed in every season. Summer brings warm sunny days to enjoy the many water activities available on the reservoir or from one of the outfitters located along the Allegheny River. An eclectic menu of events and festivals including the award winning Warren County Fair. Autumn brings a spectacular display of foliage; events include a fishing tournament and a Johnny Appleseed Festival. Warren County is your winter playground, enjoy snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, sledding, hiking through snow white silent forests, ice fishing on the Allegheny Reservoir and Winterfest/sled dog races held annually at Chapman State Park. With spring comes rebirth; wild flowers, fawns, eaglets and mountain laurel blooming throughout the county.
The 12,000 acre Allegheny Reservoir was created by the Kinzua Dam. Located on Route 59, just east of the city of Warren, this flood control/hydro-electric dam was completed in 1965. Visitors may view this engineering marvel first hand from a portion of its roadway or adjacent overlook area. A marina just three miles from the dam, provides easy access to the waterway.
Breathtaking scenic views of the Allegheny Reservoir from the Rimrock Overlook is perfect for fall foliage viewing. A series of wooden steps lead to a viewing area atop a large rock face. For the mildly adventuresome, explore the area and see the mountain laurel in bloom in early June. The trail is steep and difficult.
Warren County Winterfest is the largest winter event in the Pennsylvania Wilds region. Held at Chapman State Park in January of each year, the event features a variety of Winter outdoor activities for the whole family to enjoy including Jim Lobdell Memorial Sled Dog Races, Polar Bear Plunge, Snow Sculpture contest and more.
